Develop a linking strategy

You have to develop a linking strategy to be successful.  It is important that you have a plan in place and stick to that plan before you ever build your website.  Below you will find an outline of what an effective linking strategy looks like.  If you develop a strategy like the one below you will be well on the road to achieving your long term goals with your website.  If you fail to plan ahead and just start throwing up links to your site they will have little to no effect at helping you get visitors and ultimately money to you site.

Long term link building takes effort and commitment that most people do not have.  That is the reason there are so many new “SEO” companies popping up every year.  Yes it is in quotes for a reason.  Most people and companies that believe they understand SEO and link building are clueless and don’t help their customers as much as they could if they had better plans in place.  The fact is that article marketing is the most effective marketing you can do for your site, but most link builders get it wrong also.  Why they would spend money to write article and then completely waste that effort is a testament to just how profoundly ignorant they are.  Submitting the same crappy article to a bunch of article directories has now become WORTHLESS.  Yes worthless it will not help you at all.  In fact it may even hurt your overall ability to rank for your chosen keywords, because of the spam factor.

Article marketing done right is through the use of just a very few places that help you to gain relevance for your site and the articles you have written or have purchased.  Yes you can purchase the articles you will need for your marketing campaign and they are truly a worthwhile investment.  But make sure you place the articles yourself and do all of the linking properly.  There are two key elements that go with this article the first is HTML Linking and the second is keyword research.  If either of these steps are skipped then you might as well give up and don’t waste your time.  If you do all of these steps properly then not only will you get your website where you want it to be but you will also earn a few extra dollars from your articles themselves.  Peoplefuel.com squidoo.com and hubpages.com will all share revenue with you for the articles you submit.  Do not submit the same articles to all three or again you will be defeating your own purposes.  Write or purchase three to five articles on each keyphrase you are targeting.  And submit 1 to each of those three places using the mind map structure below.  It does not take thousands of links to your site it takes good links from the right places.

Part of your linking strategy should also include submitting your site to free directories.  But this should be a very small part of your strategy.  Free directories are practically a dime a dozen and will not help your ranking very much over all.  Some companies may try to convince you that submitting to directories will be enough to get your site highly ranked but they are wrong.  That being said a few links in good directories will help slightly, and because it is easy and free do take some time to submit your site on a weekly basis to at least 5 directories.  That adds up to 260 links a year and every little bit does help.

But most importantly follow the mind map below and you will reap the rewards proper linking.  After you develop a linking strategy stick with it to the end and see for yourself.  I know I say this over and over but the real winners do not give up with a proper fight.  Don’t be one of the many who give up too early and waste what could have been a golden opportunity.
