Domain tasting

I made the video on how to find a good domain name but there is one more thing that I wanted to share.  When you go to a domain registrar and start typing in domain names to see if they are available you run the risk of losing a good domain name if you don’t purchase it right away.  Here’s the deal, most domain registrars sell the data from their searches to other companies that will register the available .com domain names that were searched on the registrars system.  They are doing what is called domain tasting.  How the system is set up right now is that anyone can register a domain name for a period of 5 days to judge if the name is any good.  A good name by their calculations is one that gets traffic, from either direct type in of the name, or from it being registered before and having people follow links to it.

What these companies will do is make a judgment about the traffic and decide whether or not to keep the name.  If it has good traffic by their definition they will keep it and put up a bunch of ads for people to click on when they come to the site.  Obviously the company makes money from those clicks and you have lost the domain name just because you searched to see if it was available.  Network Solutions is one of the biggest offenders when it comes to selling search data, and quite frankly they should be ashamed of themselves.  As one of the early pioneers in domain name registrations they should hold themselves to a higher standard and protect the good of the Internet as a whole.  But it looks like they care more about the money like most corporations.

Domain tasting should be done away with by icann but they obviously have a giant stick in their…….  Never mind.  They should however take a longer look at the junk that is filling the web and make a few adjustments to their policies to eliminate some of it.

The moral of this rant is that you should register any good domain name you look up immediately or risk losing it forever.  A domain taster may just find some value in the domain you wanted so badly.  It doesn’t take much traffic to pay for the 10.00 registration fee each year.  And the price of good domain names just keeps going up.
