Build links

The most common question I get asked is “how do I make my site show up in the search engines?”  The answer I always give is that you have to build links.  It doesn’t start there though it starts with keyword research and a good linking strategy.  Those people always come back with “where can I get good links?”  This article will try to simplify the answer to that question without getting into major detail on all of the ways to get high quality links.  Believe me not all links are created equal.

You can build your own very high quality links through the use of just a few sites though.  First though I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to make sure that you have done all of your homework first.  For this example I will use a retail store as a basis.  If you have a shopping site then the first thing you need to do is look at keywords for each and every product you sell.  Use those keywords in the descriptions of your products and if possible as the title of your products.  For example if you sell paintball supplies you should use “paintball gun” and not “x-303” as your title for the paintball guns you are selling.  If you have multiple guns then use ‘paintball gun x-303” and “paintball gun f-15”.  Again make sure you have good descriptions and title tags set up for each product.

Now if you were to either write or have five articles written about each product you sell and place them at each of these five sites (ezinearticles.com, hubpages.com, peoplefuel.com, squidoo.com, and expurt.com) then you will have such a large advantage over your competition they will probably not be able to compete with you.  One of the things you should also do is not point every single article at your site but daisy chain some of them to build up the quality of the few articles that are pointed at your site.  For example on product A, point all 5 articles at your product page.  But for product B only point one article at your site and the other 4 at the article that is pointing at your site.  Then for product C, point 1 article at your site and link all of the other articles in a line so that each one points at the next (1->2->3->4->5->your site).

Inevitably the next thing I hear is “but I have a thousand products.”  My response here is exactly what you would hear from me in person.  Then you had better get started.  The truth is that you are going to start seeing traffic and results almost right away, but if you commit to doing every single product the same way then you have a long term linking strategy that is sure to keep you where you want to be.  Don’t stop once you start getting results, that is like the kiss of death.  I would equate it to someone on my favorite TV show SURVIVOR say “I feel safe tonight”.  You know right then and there that their end is near.

I haven’t even told you about building links to your links yet.  Just wait until you have to get started on that.  It really isn’t as hard or as cumbersome as you would imagine.  But it does take time and effort which is a lot more than most people will put into their businesses.  Be the exception to the rule and you might just find yourself with a full time income from your efforts.
